A non-traditional field for women is an area where women have typically not made up a large part of the workforce—in the past, they have been male-dominated. This might include trades, transport, engineering and some technology roles.

Fields that are often seen as being non-traditional for women are full of exciting opportunities. Working in these areas can offer practical, hands-on work with competitive salaries and good job security. For example, many trades are in high demand, which means they could offer better pay and stability.

The Women’s Career Grants offer up to $4,999 to help you re-enter the workforce after a career break of at least six months. This grant helps you with expenses associated with returning to work, like workwear, technology, childcare, training and relocation.

If you have children, the government can help you to pay for childcare services. Find out more about financial help with childcare.

Mentoring gives you the chance to learn from someone who already works in the field. They can share their experience, help you develop your skills and support you as you build your career.

Many industries have mentoring or support programs for women. For example:

Skilling Queenslanders for Work training projects help jobseekers gain skills, qualifications, experience and confidence for work. It's free to participate in this program.

Some projects are designed for women returning to work.
