James knew uni wasn't for him. Find out how he trained as a carpenter and built a rewarding career in construction.

Never really was confident in what I wanted to do. I started off doing a university degree. That's what I've been told I have to do. I.T. happened to be the one that I chose at the time, and just found that it wasn't for me.

I'm James, I'm a carpenter and I've got a Cert III in Carpentry. I found my way into a construction labouring job, and I just haven't looked back since.

It seems pretty daunting when you leave school, but you don't have to pick what you're going to be doing for the rest of your life. There's so many things you can do. Everyone starts at different times, and it just so happened that I landed in construction and loved it.

If you enjoy a fast-paced environment, and you like working with your hands, or being outdoors and maybe struggle a little bit learning and sitting down and reading in the classroom, then yeah, it's perfect.

When I was undertaking my apprenticeship, I really enjoyed being able to learn on the job

and learn as I was going about my day-to-day duties. Working for a builder, I do any where from footings last week, and now doing finish carpentry. Measuring up jams and architraves, installing them using spirit levels and laser levels, making sure everything looks good and everything looks right.

You're all working together to get one goal. There's a lot of camaraderie that can form around that.

Looking back at the end of the day or at the end of the week and being like, ‘Oh, this is actually what I’ve accomplished, all of this around me.’ It's pretty cool.
