I struggled a bit with school. I didn't like it, I couldn't really into it. It wasn’t my thing.
I’m Sammy Masih, I’m 28 years old, studying Registered Nursing, and I currently work as an Enrolled Nurse.
I've done several qualifications in Tourism and Hospitality, and from there, I have now transitioned into Health Care.
What I love about Aged Care is spending time with them in an important part of their life. I love the staff, the residents, just getting to know everyone and hearing their different stories and getting a different take on everyone's aspect of life.
It was definitely not even thought that I would go to uni, I didn't even want to go to college.
I missed a few years in high school. It wasn't until I did a school-based apprenticeship, from that, I kind of got a bit more confident.
I would absolutely recommend VET, especially for people that aren't too sure or need the flexibility. I think the main thing for me was being able to learn, but then participate in what I'm learning. I'm a bit of a hands-on learner, so it's not just all bookwork, it's actually participating in the industry.
I like the flexibility of being able to work in the afternoon and then study during the day. It's kind of grown my appreciation for education.
VET opened up many doors. Doors I didn't even think were a possibility, so I got amazing opportunities through them, like going to teach hospitality in Vietnam, which was definitely a highlight.
Just reflecting on where I started to where I am now is kind of mind blowing. I’m super glad I have done the VET pathways.
